I got this link off Michael Moore's website, it's about depleted uranium. I know nothing about uranium, but after seeing this, I plan to learn more. The images on this website are so heartbreaking that I couldn't help crying over them. Let me know what you guys think.

Michael Moore is a liar.

It's called depleted uranium for a reason -- it's DEPLETED. It is no more dangerous than the change in your pocket.

What's particularly dishonest is that depleted uranium is largely used for A10 ammunition which was fired in the desert. How exactly do Iraqi children get affected by it? Amazingly, A10 pilots seem to have a magic immunity to its "dire" affects.

Don't believe everything you read on the net.

Well, I'm not sure what depleted uranium does to the body, but I do know this much the babies in those pictures are badly deformed. I also remember hearing that some of the soliders coming home from Iraq during the 90's were sick, and that their babies were deformed. Finally, Michael Moore didn't write the website, he just provided the link. What proof do you have that he's a liar?

Even pathetic attempts at witticisms fail me tonight so instead, I offer:

"The Health Hazards of Depleted Uranium" Parts 1 and 2 by the UK Royal Society. Part 1 focuses on radiological risks, and part 2 focues on potential environmental issues & toxicity - it even touches risks to civilian populations.

http://www.royalsoc.ac.uk/files/statfiles/document-167.pdf (part II)

Those, as well as the results of other studies from the UN and European Commission can be found here: http://www.deploymentlink.osd.mil/du_library/balkans.shtml
(On a geekier note - the banner for that page has an /awesome/ picture of the hyperkinetic-dart portion of a sabot round seperating from the rest of the round in-flight.)

Also - more interesting reading:

(I don't like reading PDF files in my browser - so this is Google's HTMLized version of the PDF. If you'd prefer the PDF it is here: http://chppm-www.apgea.army.mil/usachppmresources/DepletedUraniumTwoPagesFinalVersionWPI.pdf

kth: Exactly.

The issue of depleted uranium has been looked into.

Did some of our soldiers coming home get sick? Absolutely. And what does that have to do depleted uranium?

If Michael Moore is linking to an article, one can assume he believes it to be true. He is saying it is true in effect. It's not just untrue but it's a blatant lie.

Let's pretend, however, that depleted uranium was toxic. For the sake of argument.

Do you know what the source of depleted uranium is? Where it mostly comes from? Ordinance. Specifically, ordiance used by A10s mainly.

# of A10s in Bahgdad in 1991: 0.

And even if they were firing glowing nuclear waste, do you hvae any idea how much it would require to get into the environment at a level that would end up causing birth defects? Massive amounts.
